Pinching pennies

I've done a lot of searching on ways to save on my grocery bill in the last year. One of the things I have found is that cutting the cost of drug store items has saved me more than anything. I gave up my shampoo and began using the same one mom and Cindy use. Though my hair is far more oily than theirs, I can just wash it more often and only wash it once each time and get the same clean hair and don't use any more shampoo. I just wash it in the sink every other day (if I shower everyday, my skin drys out way too badly).
I've found if I make my own foaming facial cleanser I save a few pennies and I don't waste as much cleanser. I found this article quite a while ago, but didn't put it to use until 3 months ago. I used advice I got here. While this article is about hand soap I use it to make my own foaming facial cleanser using a cheap store brand general facial cleaner. In fact this Walgreen's cleanser, it's a gel style cleanser and hard to rinse off and I end up using to much. Now that it's foaming I use far less and get the same clean face. I've been using it for about 3months now and I just opened my second bottle of Walgreen's cleanser last week.
I use about about a tbsp. of the Walgreen's cleanser in the 6 oz bottle I recycled. Since I wash my face no less than 10 times a day (extremely oily) this has kept my skin from drying out and saved me tons of $$$.
I also recycled an old liquid hand soap bottle and put my dish washing soap in it. Now a few pumps of soap keeps me from using to much for a sink full of dishes.
I've started scrubbing out the sinks with baking soda and I keep a spray bottle filled with 50/50 blend of water and vinegar by the sink. I give it a spray down every time I use the sink, this cuts down on cleaning products. The vinegar water is the perfect cleaner for the fridge too!
These are just a few of the things I been doing to cut the grocery bill, what are some things you do that helps cut that every higher total at the check out stand?

I love cleaning with baking soda. I also use the vinegar spray in my kitchen. Another use for baking soda is shampoo! Mix a little with water and viola! I tried that for the first time last week. I have heard that at first your hair may not look very nice, but once your scalp adjusts its oil production and your pores get cleaned out it your hair is supposed to be softer. The same article I read also recommended this for people who dont use hair products. I use alot of hair products. But noticed my hair felt better after the baking soda rinse.

Hey girl,
I will have to give that a try. I'm a wash and shake kind of girl, no hair products here, unless there's a very special occasion. I give a quick comb through then scrunch and shake. I bet that would help with the oiliness of my hair too? Thanks for the tip.

Hey Vikki,
I got these tips from a magazine. I clipped them. I use the window cleaner all the time.

WINDOW CLEANER - I use 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 tsp liquid dish soap and 2 cups water in a spray bottle.

FURNITURE POLISH - 1/4 cup vinegar and few drops of olive oil

TOILET CLEANER- 1/2 cup baking soda in the bowl then pour in 1 cup vinegar. When it stops fizzing, swirl with brush and flush

ALL DUTY DE GUNKER- 1/2 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp borax, 1/2 tsp liquid soap, 2 c hot water put in a spray bottle

I have a friend that makes her own laundry soap. She uses the Duggers recipe from that show 18 kids and counting. I think she googled the recipe. If you want it let me know and I will ask her for it.
Hope this helps. :)

Oh and I almost forgot, another friend of mine uses 1/2 c white vinegar in her wash as fabric softner and she swears by it.

Thank you New Vision,
I've used that recipe for window cleaner nearly all my life. My mom always used either vinegar and water or alcohol and water, especially for mirrors.
But I've never read you could clean the toilet that way. I use it to clean my drains, now I'll give it a try on the toilet...giggle
But the furniture polish has me very excited. My end tables need to be cleaned something terrible and I just hate Murphy's soap, it smells so bad! I've been putting it off forever because I hate that smell. I'll be giving it a try this next week with the vinegar and olive oil. Thanks again so much!
I've wondered about making my own laundry soap. I'll have to look into that, I don't mind the one I use,Sun, but I do worry about all the chemicals we put back into our environment!
Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend. Hugs,
Vikki

I use the vinegar as a laundry boaster on my dirtier cloths, but I've never noticed the softening effect that people say it has, but for towels it's perfect, they aren't rough but they still have their absorbency. Maybe I need to add a bit more to get the softening effect. I have a heavy duty washer so maybe it's just to diluted. Thanks will try that again.

Sadekat,
I washed my hair in baking soda last night, oh my gosh! what can I say it waved and curled like it hasn't in years. All I did was wash rinse in vinegar and comb out and shake. I looked in the mirror later when I went in the restroom and by golly it was wonderful.
Hugs and thanks for the suggestion,
Vikki
